The Benefits of Strength Training
Strength training....what is it and is it right for me? We iron out some myths behind it...
Strength training.... What exactly is it and is it suitable for me? Will it make me bigger? It’s only for men isn’t it? A few questions that are often heard in the gym when it comes to strength training.
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) says muscular strength ‘is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert maximal external force’. In other words, in 1 repetition, what is the most amount of weight that muscle or muscle group can lift. Strength training therefore is the training you do to prepare your body to be able to perform that 1 repetition.
Anyone can do strength training (although if you are new to exercise or have pre existing injuries it is important you speak to a professional before starting a new programme) and it won’t ‘make you look bigger’. It has many benefits.
The first being it can enhance both physical and mental health- it lowers blood pressure, increases bone density, and is effective for decreasing depression.
Another is it can improve body composition (something a lot of us are thinking about as we train!). Finally, it can add fun and challenge to your training programme. By working towards a goal of increasing your strength you will be adding structure and purpose to your workouts- and then, when you achieve that goal it feels just awesome!
